Car Battery Installation Steps

In order to learn how to install a car battery, it’s important to have the proper tools. These include a wrench and battery cleaning solution. The new battery, wire brush, pliers, and anti-corrosion spray are other parts you’ll want to have on-hand. Once you have everything above, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn the engine off and put on the parking brake. Then open the hood and locate the battery.
  2. Loosen the nut connecting the black (negative) cable from the battery using a wrench.
  3. Twist and pull the cable off once the nut is loose. If the nut is stuck, don’t try to pry it off. This can damage the battery. Carefully wiggle the nut back and forth or use an anti-seize agent to release it.
  4. Using the same steps above, remove the red (positive) cable from its terminal.
  5. Loosen and remove the clamps that hold the battery in place.
  6. Now that the battery is ready to be removed, lift the battery out with both hands. Car batteries are heavy and dropping one could cause it to break and leak or you could injure yourself.
  7. Use the anti-corrosion spray to remove any corrosion from the battery tray and clamps. If you don’t have anti-corrosion spray you can use a baking soda and water solution.
  8. Take the wire brush and clean off the battery cable connectors with the same cleaning solution.
  9. Install the new battery by placing it in the battery tray and tightening the hold-down clamps.
  10. Spray the anti-corrosion solution on the positive (+) and negative (-) terminal of the new battery before connecting the cables. This will prevent corrosion and extend battery life.
  11. Attach the red (positive) battery cable first, then the black (negative) cable.
  12. Check the connections and the battery to make sure everything is secure.
  13. Start the car to ensure the battery is working properly. If you have any issues, contact us at Lexus of Cherry Hill and we’ll help you troubleshoot the problem.
